Washington Avenue Streetscape and Plaza
Golden, Colorado
The City of Golden retained Winston Associates Design Team to design the new Washington Avenue Bridge and recreational waterfront plaza. Recognizing a golden opportunity, the City decided to use the bridge replacement as a chance to design a new gateway into downtown Golden. The proximity to the nationally-renowned kayak water course gave the Clear Creek river corridor and surrounding area virtually unlimited choices for trails, recreation and commercial connections to the library, downtown and museum. The bridge and plaza were meant to provide another urban space for residents and visitors to enjoy the unrivaled scenery, as well as unique heritage of Golden. Winston Associates worked with the structural engineers in the aesthetic design of the bridge, which incorporates suspended pedestrian pathways that get pedestrians off the sidewalk and enable creek and mountain views. The bridge, recreation plaza and art amphitheater (not shown) have been an enormous success.
